Mal Pais long term rentals are for those wanting to enjoy the beach and get off the beaten track.
Mal Pais is about 30 minutes down a dirt road from the county hub of Cobano on the Pacific Coast at the very bottom of the Nicoya Peninsula. Getting to the tip of the peninsula is easieset by fairy from the mainland including San Jose via Puntarenas and Pacquera.
Coming down the peninsula is easiest through Nicoya and Nandayure and then onto Pacquera, but this road is very poorly maintained.
Access being limited is a good thing for some, however, and Malpais is cherished by residents. There are many architecturally stunning homes owned by the wealthy from all over the world.
There are also more economical options without ocean views that are a short walk to the beach.
Mal Pais is the quieter neighbor of Santa Teresa, which has many small hotels, more supermarkets, restaurants and shops.
Favorite activities in the area include nature watching in Cabo Blanco National Park and surfing. Nature is abundant in the park with many species of plant and animal easy to spot.
Surfing is a favorite pass time in both Mal Pais and Santa Teresa. There are multiple beach and reef breaks in the area and plenty of surf shops as well.
