Puntarenas has a very unique geography located on a small peninsula that reaches out into the Gulf of Nicoya. The name roughly translates to sandy point.
Much of the sheltered side of Puntarenas is dedicated to boat culture, with marinas, boat repair and supply stores common. There are also luxury apartments in some of these marinas.
Puntarenas serves a fishing port but larger boats dock in Caldera. The ferries to the Nicoya Peninsula leave from Puntarenas as well.
Rentals in Puntarenas range from very affordable apartments and homes in the older parts of town. These may be above commercial space. More luxury options are available in some of the newer marina developments.
Access to Puntarenas is easy from San Jose via Orotina or Esparza.
