Costa Rica mountain homes for rent are usually built to take advantage of spectacular views.  There could be a fantastic view of one of the many volcanoes: Arenal, Irazu, Rincon de La Vieja, or Poas.  There might also be a great view of the ocean in the distance as found in places like Orotina, an area on the sloping side of the chain of mountains that splits Costa Rica in two.

Construction of homes in the mountains varies.  Many in the upper reaches have chimneys as temperatures may reach near freezing at night with wind. In more coastal areas, they may be designed to be opened up and cooled by the prevailings winds. You can see this type of construction in the hills of the Nicoya Peninsula.

Construction can range from colonial homes of block construction with barrel tile roofs to wooden log cabins with massive picture windows.  Homes can be found on large lots or in gated communities. 

There is really a lot of variation as development over the last ten years has begun in areas around Lake Arenal, Atenas, Turrialba and other popular mountain areas with great climates.

You might also find some specialized homes like trees houses.  These homes are built on stilts to put living quarters at the height of the forrest canopy so inhabitants can watch the incredible animal life of Costa Rica go by. 

Mountain homes in Costa Rica that are available for vacation rental are furnished whereas you may find homes available for long term rental that are unfurnished.
